Reflections of the Life & Legacy

Henry Clarence High, affectionately known as H.C., was born on August 15, 1941, in Freestone County, Texas, to Clarence and Claudine High, and his early years in this close-knit community shaped who he became.

Henry's educational journey began in the warm setting of the Freestone County School District, where he attended Dogan High School, a place that holds many cherished memories close to his heart. The joy of reconnecting with old friends at reunions was something he truly valued, as it allowed him to celebrate the shared history that bound them together.

In 1962, Henry found the love of his life in Jean Bonner, who became his devoted wife. Together they nurtured a beautiful family, welcoming three children and became the center of their world. From an early age, Henry's Christian faith gave him strength and guidance. He showed a deep commitment to Homeland Street Missionary Baptist Church, where he served with joy for over 50 years. Henry embodied his devotion to God and his church community. His eagerness to help others was clear as he answered every call for service with a warm smile. He made significant contributions to the Deacon Board. Henry uplifted voices in the male chorus, drove the church bus with care, managed repairs, tended the church grounds, and enriched the community with his delicious cooking.

Henry dedicated more than 30 years of his life as a heavy equipment operator for the City of Dallas. His unwavering work ethic and dedication shone brightly throughout his career. He took great pride in his contributions to the city. This sense of accomplishment encouraged him to continue serving for additional years. Later, his culinary talents came to life when he opened a seafood restaurant and delighted patrons with his much-loved fried fish. He also owned a lawn service, working with his grandson Malachi and his two brothers, Ordis, and James Edward, strengthening the familial bond between grandfather, grandson, and uncles. Through their shared labor and experiences, they created lasting bonds built on love and camaraderie. Their teamwork reflected the values Henry cherished most.

H.C. was known by many names: Pawpaw, Daddy, and Uncle Henry. He was a dependable man, a devoted father, grandfather, and friend. His sense of humor and radiant smile touched everyone around him. Each morning, his horn glared through the community, heralding his arrival to pick up his grandsons, Mali, and Dylan for school at St. Philips, as well as the church members for Sunday service on the church van. We lovingly referred to him as "Henry the Magic School Bus," a true beacon of joy and connection in our lives.

To know him was to love him a hardworking man to never be forgotten, he entered into eternal rest on Sunday morning, July 27, 2025, with his loved ones at his bedside. Henry was preceded in death by his father, Clarence High Jr.; his mother, Claudine Johnson High; his wife, Jean Orlette High; his daughter, Danita Orlette High; and his brothers, Willie Howard Gibson, Rayford Lee High, and Ordis High.

He leaves to cherish his memories his daughters; Angelina Allen, Crystal High, Candace High; grandchildren, Gavin M. Jackson, Brooklyn Bookman, and Skye Smith; brother, James High (Annie); sisters, Agnes Jean Bray, Claudia Smith (Durn), and Noel Dian High Foster; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends. Over the years, Henry also opened his heart and adopted many sons and daughters through his church community, treating them as family. Special thanks go to his cousin Hayward Small, nephew Anthony Marshall, brother in law Joe Mack Lewis, neighbors Bryant Maddox (Key-Key) and Willie Earl Smith.
