Yalonda Vianetta Booker (Brown) was the 1st born daughter to Jean (Register) and Robert Brown, on July 25, 1962. Her mother often says that “Yogi” (as she was affectionately known) arrived with ease. She was an easy baby to love. Matriculating through the public-school systems of Dallas and Tyler, Texas, Yalonda’s love for music quickly became evident. Gifted with a remarkable classical soprano voice and talent for the French horn, she developed a deep appreciation for the beauty of sound in all its forms. Her exceptional ability earned her a two-year scholarship to Tyler Junior College, after which she continued her studies in Chicago.
Upon returning to Dallas, she dedicated her life fully to Christ and to serving others. She was a faithful member of The Potter’s House Dallas and later became a devoted member of Prince of Peace Church in Dallas, Texas, under the leadership of Overseer Barbara Mitchell and Pastor Roderick Mitchell Jr., where she faithfully served as a Sunday School Teacher. And on October 28, 1998, Yalonda was ordained a Minister at Wells of Living Waters Church.
A devoted servant, Yalonda shared her musical gifts as Choir and Music Director at Cedar Valley Christian Church for over a decade. During this time, she also served as a daycare director, nurturing and guiding countless young lives. Though she did not have children of her own, she lovingly nurtured and mentored many, leaving a lasting impact that will continue to bless generations.
Her compassion extended beyond the church. With a heart for the vulnerable, she dedicated her career to public service with the Texas Department of Child Protective Services and the Department of Health and Human Services. Through her work, she ensured that families and individuals received the care, support, and dignity they deserved.
Even in the face of a courageous battle with cancer, Yalonda remained steadfast in faith and resilient in spirit. Though told she would never sing again, she continued to lift her voice in praise, blessing congregations and gospel ministries such as The Potter’s House of Dallas, Eric Birdine and the Messengers and Minister Marquinn Middleton & The Miracle Chorale.
Yalonda was preceded in death by her father, Robert Brown; her sister, Yavonda Campbell; and her stepfather, Oscar Register. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving mother, Jean Register; her young sister, Aisha Searight; sister, Shauna Stubbs; sister, Carla Everhart; sister, Tawana Brown; her brother-in-law, Robert “Sput” Searight II; her nephew, Robert Searight III; her beloved cousins—Angelique, Anithia, Kevin, Lori, and Kendra—along with a host of extended relatives and friends.
Yogi possessed a rare gift for making everyone feel like family. Her love was unconditional, her kindness unwavering, and her presence unforgettable. She delighted in life’s joys—celebrating Christmas in July, sharing her passion for music, cherishing fellowship with loved ones, and embracing her favorite color, purple.
Her legacy is one of faith, service, and love. Though she will be profoundly missed, her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
