In Loving Memory of Torrie Lynn Butler
Torrie Lynn Butler was born on November 24, 1968, in New Orleans, Louisiana, the youngest child of Allison and Catherine Butler. From her earliest days, Torrie’s life was a testament to the fruits of the Spirit described in Galatians 5:22: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.” These qualities were evident in every chapter of her journey. From her earliest days, Torrie was baptized at the age of 9 years in VBS. She was charter member Beacon Light Baptist and Christian Unity Baptist Church. Torrie’s life was a testament to the fruits of the Spirit described in Galatians 5:22: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.” These qualities were evident in every chapter of her journey.
Torrie’s childhood was filled with music and joy. She played the clarinet in both junior high and high school marching bands, sharing her love of music with those around her. After graduating from John F. Kennedy Senior High School in New Orleans, Torrie pursued higher education at Southern University at New Orleans, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Education. Her commitment to learning continued at Xavier University, where she received a Master of Arts in Education. Torrie was Teacher of the Year in 2004-2005 in New Orleans Public Schools. She relocated to Texas in August, 2005, because of hurricane Katrina. She joined Pilgram Rest Baptist church where she served as a teacher in Children’s church and was a member of Sunday school.
As an educator for over 30 years in various school districts from Louisiana to Texas, her journey ended at the Dallas Independent School District. She also served as the Director of the after-school program at Christian Unity Baptist Church; Torrie always embodied the spirit of kindness and goodness. She was a creative and loving teacher, always patient and dedicated, ensuring every child she encountered had the opportunity to succeed. Her work was a living example of Galatians 5:22, as she poured love, joy, and faithfulness into her students and colleagues.
Despite facing many health challenges—her “mountains and valleys”—Torrie’s perseverance and peace never wavered. She continued to give her all to the children she taught and the people she loved, living life to the fullest and inspiring those around her.
Torrie was a devoted daughter, always present for her mother, Catherine Fields Butler (Williams), just as her mother was steadfast for her. This legacy of love and support was passed on to her beloved daughter, Kiara Lynn Butler. The bond between Torrie and Kiara was unbreakable, filled with shared adventures, laughter, and the gentle guidance of a mother’s love. Torrie’s nurturing spirit, rooted in the fruits of the Spirit, shaped Kiara’s life and will continue to do so for generations.
She found joy in reading, music, traveling, and discovering new restaurants. Surrounded by tasty food, great family, and loving friends, Torrie’s smile radiated kindness to everyone she met. Her presence was a blessing, and her absence will be deeply felt.
Torrie was preceded in death by her father, Allison Butler; her brother, Jairus L. Butler; and her stepfather, Bernell Williams, grandparents, Harry B. and Catherine Thomas Fields, Adolph and Lille Ritch Butler.
She leaves to cherish her memories, loving daughter, Kiara Lynn Butler; her devoted mother, Catherine Fields Butler (Williams), beloved friend, Anthony Wise, Sr.; Uncles Alvin Fields, Joseph Butler, Sr., and Edward Butler; Aunts Ernestine Butler, Emelda Firmin, Lilly Henry; and a host of family and friends.
As we celebrate Torrie’s life, we remember the words of Galatians 5:22, for she truly lived a life marked by love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, and faithfulness. Torrie Lynn Butler’s legacy is one of compassion, resilience, and unwavering love—a life well lived and a soul who will be dearly missed.
