Obituary of Ola Mae Jackson Comins

Please share a memory of Ola to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

We gather at this hour to give thanks and celebrate the life of Ola Mae Jackson Comins, the second child of the three children of Arthur, Sr. and Elsa McClure Jackson.  Her parents and siblings, Jeanette Jackson and Arthur Jackson Jr. and spouse Lillian Jackson, have entered the place of eternal rest.  Ola was born on July 12, 1926, in Keatchie, Louisiana.  Her family moved to Houston where she graduated from Jack Yates High School.  The bachelor’s degree was earned from Wiley College, and the master’s degree from North Texas State University with French and English as fields of concentration.

Ola and her college sweetheart, Marvin Brooks Comins were married for 63 years before his death.  They were blessed with a daughter, Adrienne Comins Wright.

As an employee for the Dallas Independent School District for 33 years, she taught at Julia C. Frazier Elementary School, was teacher of French and English at Oliver Wendell Holmes Middle School and Instructional Facilitator for Language in Middle Schools in the East Oak Cliff Sub District.  After retirement, Ola was appointed as a Second Appraiser to evaluate teacher performance.  She later taught English at Bishop College.

St Luke ‘Community” United Methodist Church was a small mission congregation of 50 members where Ola joined, she was one of the persons who most actively undergirded our mission with her teaching skills and other gifts.  She has served as chairperson of the Administrative Board, the Council and Ministries and the Pastor Parish Committee, a member of the Trustee Board and Building Committee.  She has represented St. Luke to the Dallas Commission on Alcoholism.  She has been a facilitator for annual church retreat and was selected as a Women’s Day Speaker.

She was a 78-year Golden Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., President of Alpha Iota Chapter at Wiley College, Charter Member of Metropolitan Dallas Alumnae Chapter, Program Planning and Development Chair for Southwest Region and Co-Chair for Panama Chapter.
