Obituary of Charles Winslow ~~Charles W. Winslow, Jr. Pianist, music educator, arts in education activist, seminary student Charles W. Winslow, Jr was born November 30, 1955, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He passed away November 11, 2017, at Presbyterian Hospital to the sounds of “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Charles was a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a young child he was always fascinated with the way music sounded at Tyree AME Church in Philadelphia, PA and began studying classical piano at the age of 8 years old. He came to Texas in 1977 as a graduate student in the school of music at the University of North Texas. Within one year he began a dual career as music educator for the Dallas Independent School District by day, and a performing musician by night. He continued this dual career until 1995 when he founded “The Winslow Group,” a fine arts, performance, and education consulting company. Charles performed extensively throughout the United States and Canada. He was well known for his stylistic accompaniments with jazz singers and solo piano. Some of his credits include performing for the late Coretta Scott King; the Princess of Normandy; actress Shirley McClaine, Nancy Wilson, the late Nancy Hamon and the late artist Jacob Lawrence. After founding The Dallas Jazz Quartet in 1986, he had the distinct opportunity of having the quartet play during a church service at St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church while accompanying Joe Williams, the late great jazz vocal legend. Charles Winslow worked as music director, producer, pianist, music coach, and keyboard synthesist for a variety of musicals and shows such as: Guys and Dolls and Fame at BTWSPVA (Arts Magnet), Stomping at the Savoy, Fatback and Collard Greens, Five Guys Named Moe, The Two Legends – Barbara McNair and Linda Hopkins at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters; She Loves Me at the Rockwall Community Playhouse; Lady Day Live at Emerson’s Bar and Grill at the Water Tower Theatre, Addison Texas; and Journeyz Through Herzstory with Liz Mikel at the Irving Arts Center. In 2002 Charles was an arts in education consultant for W.W. Wilson High School, Dallas Independent School District for their “Diversity in the Arts Initiative 2002.”
