Obituary of Laura L Muckelroy

Please share a memory of Laura to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

The youngest blessing of 11 that was Laura Lavern Vaughn, was born to John and Lugenia Vaughn in Teague, Texas. She dedicated her life to God at an early age when she joined St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Teague, Texas. Laura graduated Furney Richardson High School and attended Prairie View A & M University receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 1948.
Upon graduation from college, Laura met and married the dashing Lawrence W. Muckelroy, Sr. in 1949. Lawrence preceded her in death, passing from this life in 2005.
Laura believed in education and educational growth for all. She led the way and modeled her passion for education, enhancing her career with various certifications and a Master’s degree from The University of North Texas. She worked briefly in the Dallas Independent School District prior to moving into a lifetime career with the Richardson Independent School District (RISD). For over 35 years, she opened doors to various advanced administrative positions throughout RISD. She valued her experiences throughout her many years in RISD, but her most cherished memories were with the Hamilton Park School students and community. While Assistant Principal at Hamilton Park, she had the opportunity to guide many of the children of students she’d taught in her earlier years. Though with a firm hand, she was always kind as she inspired all to reach for excellence.
For over 60 years Laura was dedicated to Bethel A.M.E. church. She served faithfully in the 10th Episcopal District Women’s Missionary Society, Bethel Trustee, and servant to the church. In addition, she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Educators (Delta Pi chapter), the African American Educators Archives & History Program, SAGE – Seniors Actively Guiding Education and a Life member and dedicated worker with the South Dallas Business and Professional Women’s organization.
On Friday, September 18, 2020, God called his sweet daughter Laura home to be with him.
She is cherished in memory by three children, Marsha Ricks of Duncanville, Texas, Jacquelyn McNeal (Elvin) of Los Angeles, California and Lawrence W. Muckelroy, Jr. of Dallas, Texas; two grandchildren Leslie Ricks of San Diego, California and Jonathan Houston of Columbia, Missouri; six great grandchildren and many beloved nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Laura’s favorite saying to anyone who asked was, “I’m creeping, but not weeping.”

She is still creeping but not weeping!
