Obituary of Charlie Brown Smith ~~Charlie Mae Brown Smith was born on May 5, 1932, to the parentage of the late Robert and Charline Brown in Fulshear, Texas. She was the eldest of eight siblings. Charlie Mae united with Mt. Vernon Baptist Church at a very young age along with other family members. She later became a member of St. John Baptist Church, where she enjoyed her Sunday school class. Charlie Mae received her education from A. W. Jackson School in Rosenberg, Texas. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Prairie View A&M University in Hempstead, Texas. Later, she earned a post-graduate degree in Library Science from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. She was employed with the Dallas Independent School District for over 40 years. After retiring, she volunteered to read to students. She was affiliated with many organizations and involved in community activities: Paul L. Dimbar Learning Center – named in her honor, Delta Sigma Theta – lifetime member, The Black Academy of Arts and Letters – board member, Duncanville Library Board – member and president, Prairie View A&M University Alumni Association. She was also a world traveler. On Friday, June 30, 2017, Charlie Mae Smith was called home. She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Brown Sr. and Charline Dyer Brown; two brothers, Phillip Owens Brown and Robert Brown, Jr.; and one sister, Toma C. Fowler. She leaves to cherish the memories of her life: one brother, Edward N. Brown Sr. (Dorothy) of Dallas; three sisters, Minnie Lee Brown of Rosenberg, Texas, Dr. Mary M. Brown of Houston, Texas, and Shirley J. Moffett of New York and Australia; sister-in-law, Judy Brown of Rosenberg, Texas; nieces and nephews: Charles Moffett Jr., Codaryl Moffett, Charisse Moffett-Camano (Rene), Charnett Moffett, Monica Renee Adeeko (Michael II), Edward Bidun Jr. (Amber), Lori Hawkins (Roderick), Craig Fowler, Terri Fowler, and Deborah Lynch; and a host of other family members and friends.
