Obituary of Alice Dabbs
~~Life of a Warrior
Alice Dabbs was born January 24, 1928, in Denison, Texas, to the parents of George Cornell and Inez Stevenson, who both preceded her in death. She received Christ at an early age. She attended Denison’s only black church with her grandmother, Artie Nelson.
She completed her education at Denison High School. She then moved to Dallas in 1945, working odd jobs from cigarette and coat check girl, to maid, nanny, cleaning buildings, and working for the likes of Fat’s Domino, Jr. Walker, and Booker T. Washington. She also worked as a school cook for D.I.S.D. and for the first black-owned cab company in Dallas. Mrs. Dabbs’s last job was working for Lee Data Mailing center. Mrs. Dabbs was never without a job!
She married a musician, and to this union three children were born: Gloria McDonald, Emma Sample (Charles) and Louella Edwards, all of Dallas. She had four children during her second marriage: Clinton Jones, Danny Jones (Houston), Tom Jones (Annette) and Linda Jones. In 1982 she married Robert Dabbs, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Dabbs joined the C.M.E. family early in her life, attending Bold Street under the leadership of Rev. Ruckus, and Cedar Crest under the leadership of Rev. Lucky; her journey ended at First Christian Methodist Evangelistic Church under the leadership of Rev. Gene Burt and Dr. John Wilson.
Mrs. Dabbs had a lot of jobs, but her favorite job was preparing the Lord’s table as a Stewardess. She also worked on the greeter’s board and early morning choir. She was a lay person, she loved attending The Gene Burt Sunday School class, and Tuesday Morning Bible Study. No matter the weather she was going to bible study and anything related to the Missionary society!
She also enjoyed cooking large family meals and traveling with her daughter, Linda.
She leaves to cherish her memories, seven and a half children, twenty-one grandchildren (two preceded her in death), twenty great-grandchildren, and twenty great-great-grandchildren, three brothers, James Cornell of Waco, Texas, Agustus Robinson of Garland, Texas (Thomas Jr. preceded her in death), and one sister, Artie McGee of Phoenix, Arizona.
