I admired Dr. Sweatt for many reasons. The main one was that he was a darn good physician and chest surgeon. I was an intern at John Peter Smith Hospital, in Ft. Worth, from 1971-1972. He helped out that hospital and the house staff and the patients there immensely. He knew what to do and how to do it. He inspired confidence. He was a wonderful man. I would see him at medical meetings through the years and I would always shake his hand and tell him who I was. The history of his uncle was known to me and my assumption, apparently quite accurately, was that Dr. Sweatt had overcome great odds also. It never came up in my year-long association with him. As far as I am concerned, Dr. Sweatt was a giant among men and among doctors.
