James Gipson Jr.

Obituary of James Gipson Jr.

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

James Gipson Jr., affectionately known to close friends and family as ‘Uncle Sonny’! He was the first son of five children born to James Senior and Odessa Gipson. His eldest sister Thelma and younger siblings Everett, Mildred and Lawrence preceded him in death. As a young boy Uncle Sonny attended and successfully graduated from the ‘Texas school for the Deaf’ in Austin Texas.

Uncle Sonny met and  married his life partner and soul mate Carrie. Carrie and Uncle Sonny remained married until her passing in the early 2000’s. While Carrie and Uncle Sonny had no children of their own, they doted on all of their nieces and nephews alike. As they went on to have children of their own, they spoiled, nurtured and loved them all.

Uncle Sonny worked as a baker for over 50 years and was loved and respected by the owners and all of his coworkers.

Uncle Sonny was a champion bowler,

he won many trophies and awards.

Uncle Sonny is best known for his superior skills as a domino player. The domino table is where he shined the brightest. Even in his last days, he was able to muster up the energy and wherewithal to dominate anyone who dare challenge  in a game of “BONES”!Mike, Eevin, Ken Dinky, Sonya, Malcolm and Seven

were formidable but rarely victorious apponints until his last days. They all got their come upping’s on that Domino Table.

Uncle Sonny was respected and well liked at the “Deaf Action Center” where he resided happy, healthy and  self sufficient until
a month before his passing. He then retired to his family home on Holmes Street to be love, spoiled, pampered and cared for.

Uncle Sonny celebrated his 96th birthday on December 24, 2025 and enjoyed Christmas day with friends, family and loved ones. On Thursday morning, December 26th, the day after Christmas at about 10:28 AM, our Sweet Uncle Sonny flew away in perfect peace.

We can’t say enough about our Sweet Uncle Sonny.  He always had a loving demeanor, a sweet smile followed by his signature ‘THUMBS UP’, that assured us that everything was A, OK!
James ‘Uncle Sonny’ Gipson’s  courageous journey through life is to be Revered, Admired and Honored!!!
He was, is, now and will always be our Hero!!!

Uncle Sonny is now the FINAL sibling of the Great 5 (Sonny, Thelma, Everette, Mildred , Lawrence )  To ‘cross-over’ and take his space at the heavenly Gipson Family Table.

This event not only marks the conclusion of a great generational era in our family’s timeline , but also is the Spiritual Return of all 5 siblings , once again , reunited with their Father and Mother.
