Obituary of Ada Adams
Ada Baby Ray Brown Adams entered this earthly reality on June 22, 1920, and departed this reality on Friday, June 3, 2016. She was the youngest child born to Monnie Johnson and Earnest Brown. During her 95 plus years, her life was an adventure worth noting and definitely worth celebrating. The late Dr. Gardner Taylor would say at homegoing celebrations of an elderly saint, “she had a good run.”
Because she instructed us to keep this short, we will not detail her life’s journey, just highlight it….
9 Educated in the Public Schools of Texas
9 Matriculated from Prairie View A&M College at an early age from which she received both
a BS and Master degree. A second Masters degree was earned from North Texas State University.
9 Lived in Garrison, Houston, Paris and Dallas, Texas.
9 Worked as a stenographer and executive assistant for the Dallas Express.
9 Taught school at Montgomery, Ferris, Grand Prairie and Dallas, Texas.
9 A part of her teaching career allowed her to coach girls basketball and serve as an interim principal.
9 She retired from the Dallas Independent School District as a Counselor.
With the love of her life, she parented two boys: Lionel Joseph Adams II and Gerald Don Adams. She was very dedicated to these boys and to all of her family. She celebrated her son’s accomplishments, those of her grandson, Lionell III, and her great-grandchildren: Matthew O’Brien and Zhorae.
She was a member and in good standing with the Methodist Church, having joined it when it was called “Colored Methodist Episcopal” and remained a faithful member of “Christian Methodist Episcopal” until her passing. Her membership joys were the 8:00 am worship service at Kirkwood Temple CME, her Sunday School Class and the noonday Bible Study.
Another one of her great joys in life, was her membership in the South Dallas Business and Professional Women’s Club, where she was recognized with the prestigious Sojourner Truth Award from the National Body.
No greater sharer, no greater friend, no greater educator, no greater helper, no greater volunteer, no greater encourager, no greater advisor than Ada Adams. We joyously celebrate her today. We have to add that she was also a great spoiler. She had one other lover whom she delighted in spoiling, and that was Baron the boss. No mother, he is not pound bound.
She leaves to lead in this time of remembrance, her sons, Lionel J. and Gerald D.; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her other family, blood and extended; her cherished friends; her church family at the Wood; and her SDB & PW Club sisters. We all will miss you, but don’t worry about a thing, we will be alright. Rest in peace.
