Obituary of Courtney Shaw
Irish Jackie, Limey Brother, why did you lay your trophies down so soon?
Courtney Xavier Shaw, son of a military man was born in Marshall, Texas;
educated in Germany, Colorado, Canada, Michigan, California and Texas;
and came to the world as a modest and solitary thinking individual. He
believed in acting like a Roman when in Rome. A lyrical raconteur. A lover
of life and all people. A lover of music and languages while at the same time
being a well grounded kind of guy. For those who truly knew him well,
impossible to define in a simple way.
His first love was baseball, a sport he loved until his eyesight suddenly
changed. Then he became a long distance runner, running the ten thousand metres
when running long-distance wasn't a popular sport. He loved running the hills
of Southern California with his Spanish speaking friends and spent time
becoming fluent in Spanish. Because of his father's military travels,
he is among those seldom-remembered first black children to integrate
America's public Schools before the laws took effect, and he made a
lasting impression upon his classmates. Some still love him dearly today.
It has to be said, he was a different kind of guy. He loved excitement and
enjoyed living dangerously. Devil-may-care and often taking the easy way
out, yet somehow meticulous, obsessive and generous. Some might call him
a thrill seeker. Though he stumbled often in these pursuits , he had a stoic
temperament that made him seldom complain. Later you wouldn't hear him
complain aloud about his physical heart condition. His simply selected a
new favorite sport: watching basketball. With a ready smile for everyone
he met, he simply didn't make enemies. He went out of his way to give
people a laugh or a smile.
He was recognized from the time he entered school as someone with a great
talent for writing and continued to scribble his poems, lyrics, and short stories
until the week before he left this earth.
He was baptized in the Methodist church at the age of eleven. Later he was
re-baptized as a Baptist. He said that was because he seriously wanted to be
sure of his standing with the Lord. He always sought to experience life deeply.
He was a believer in Jesus Christ and a person of faith. But he allowed the
fun of experiencing all that life could offer to sometimes get in the way.
He spent time paying for it.
In the week before he left, He had been up on the roof replacing shingles.
A few days later, his heart stopped. His death was sudden.
On June 3, 1972, he married Annie Ruth Johnson of Dallas. He adapted Toquinee Busha
Shaw. To that union his son, Courtney X. Shaw, Jr., was born. During his many years in
Dallas, he was employed first at Princeton Packaging, then at the U.S. Postal Service, and
later held several other jobs. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Major James P. Shaw
and Mrs. Lee Ester Shaw. He also leaves to cherish his memory one sister, Madilyne Caroll Shaw
of Dallas, and two brothers: Siebern Andrew Shaw of Dallas and Dr. Cameron Shaw of Denver,
Colorado. He leaves 5 grandchildren: Christian Harris, Chayce Harris, Chyna Harris of Dallas;
Trevione Shaw of Dallas and Ali Shaw of San Diego, Californaia. He leaves one nephew:
Kaleb Darius Shaw of Yorktown, Virginia. He leaves three Nieces: Sia Adrianna Shaw of
Yorktown, Virgina; Isabella Shaw Michl of Prague, The Czech Republic; and Lea Katherine Shaw
of Denver, Colorado. He leaves many other cousins and relations in Texas, California,
Washington, D.C, and Canada.
