Obituary of Joyce Henderson

Joyce was born on December 28, 1938, to the parentage of Rev. Chester Leon and Mildred Metters in Tyler, Texas. She was educated in Dallas Public Schools, graduating in 1956 from Lincoln High School. Later, she attended North Texas State University and Texas Southern University. Joyce was employed by Texas Instruments, Community Action Agency, Dallas Urban League, and she retired in 2007 from Alpha Properties as a Property Manager. Joyce grew up in Kirkwood C.M.E. Church and later joined Bullock Chapel C.M.E. Church. In the last few years, she served faithfully at Porter Temple C.M.E. Church where she was a dedicated and committed servant. Joyce served as Secretary of the Missionary Society, member of the Lay Department, a Trustee, a member of the Culinary Department, Wednesday Morning Prayer Team, and Essie Cato Sunday School Class. Joyce was known for her warm hospitality. She was a great cook and loved entertaining her family and friends. Joyce was preceded in death by both parents, Rev. Chester Leon and Mildred Metters; husbands, Donald Walls and Gerald Henderson; sister, Deloris Jeanette Pierce; and brother, Chester Leon Metters, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving son, Kerry LaDon Walls (Joyce); special sister, Shirley Metters Williams; brother, Reuben Metters (Lynn); one devoted grandson, Kerry Brooks Walls (Diane), and five other precious grandchildren; three great-grandsons, Cameron, Chase and Corey; nieces, Francesca “Cesca” Pierce and Tara Dixon; nephews, Francis “Scott” Pierce, and Ernest and Bruce Williams; brother-in-law, Waylen Henderson; special God daughters, Lorrie Moss and Shafonda Adkins; special and devoted friends, Lewis Rhone, Lloyd and Bessie Fields, Rev. Eva Freeman, and the Porter Temple CME Church family; and numerous friends.
