Obituary of Doris Pollard
Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On October 15, 1920, Doris was born to the parentage of Pearl Shaifer Pollard and Stacy E. Pollard.
She attended Tensas Parish Training School, Southern University, the University of Michigan and many other educational institutions. Being a descendant of pioneer educators, the Shaifer’s, Doris followed tradition and began her teaching career in Lake Providence, Louisiana, at
G. W. High School. However, because of the onset of World War II, she migrated to Los Angeles and contributed to the war effort by working in industry. In 1946, when her mother, a teacher at Tensas Parish Training School, became ill and passed away, Doris returned to St. Joseph,
re-entered the educational profession and remained therein for fifty-nine years in various instructional and administrative capacities.
An avid patron of the arts, Doris promoted various art programs for both youth and adults by securing grants which provided funds to bring visual and performing artists to Tensas Parish. Additionally, as a civic-minded person, she served on various committees aimed at the well-being of many. As a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, she served as a Lector and President of the Parish Council.
Doris passed away on June 30, 2018. She leaves to cherish her memory: sister, Lila Bradley; nieces, Anita Bradley and Gaye Bradley Beason; nephew, Steven Bradley; great-niece, Lauren Beason Hardeman (Daryl); great-nephew, Mason Hardeman; and a host of Shaifer and Pollard relatives.
If desired, memorials may be made to: Tensas
