Obituary of Mayme Brooks
"Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me
And may there be no mourning at the bar,
When I set out to sea.
Mayme Wynette Brooks was born the first day of June 1924 to the parentage of Alonzo and Erie Fortner Brooks in Marshall, Texas.
She attended Hillside Elementary School and Pemberton High School in 1943. She entered Bishop College the same year and graduated with a degree in Social Studies in 1947.
Mayme accepted Christ at an early age from the Oak Grove B.C. but later joined St. Paul B.C. to join their father so that the family would all be together. There she was one of the lead singers of the choir, of which her sister directed for many years. She married in 1948 and moved to Dallas Texas in 1950. She joined Good Street B.C. in July of the same year. There she worked as assistant clerk to I.B. Smith for three years with Rev. C.A.W. Clark, Pastor. Mayme sang in the choir and was one of the lead soloist for several years.
She taught school for six years at the Rocky Crest Elementary School in Lancaster, Texas. Later she was hired as a mathematics teacher with the Dallas Independent School District at J.N. Ervin Elementary School where she made a very positive impact in math on many of her former students and taught there for 28 years or until retirement in 1987.
After retirement she traveled throughout the U.S.A. On many trips she stayed away from home 25 to 30 days. In 1996 she began cruises abroad among some: to European countries, Alaska, and several Caribbean Islands to name a few. Through it all, God was her Navigator, Protector and Director. She recognized life as a gift from God and embraced life wholeheartedly.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Father Alonzo Brooks Sr., Mother, Erie Fortner Brooks; 2 brothers, Alonzo Brooks, Jr., and Bernis Brooks, Sr., and 1 sister, Emma Earle Shepherd.
She leaves to the grace of God Almighty 2 cherished sisters, Mary Calvin Harris, her husband Louis L.C. (Inglewood, California) and Annie Pearl Bausley (Los Angeles, California). Four nieces, LaTasha Pearl Bausley-Walker, her husband Kevin (Dallas, Texas), Cheryl Jackson, her husband Albert (Carson, California), Jacqueline Dutton, her husband Noah (Cerritos, California), Rita Lee, her husband Phoebus (Harbor City, California) and one special nephew, Bernis Brooks Jr., his wife Paula (Gardena, California). A host of other caring great nieces, nephews, cousins and many loving friends who know how to show love to the family. "To God Be The Glory to the many Special Friends."
"Thank you for being a part of this "celebration" of my life." "I await the day that we can all be together again, for this is not the end."
