Obituary of Charles Wendell Jackson

Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Obituary of Charles Jackson Charles Wendell Jackson was born on September 8, 1932 to the parentage of Finis H. and Alta L. McGee Jackson in Como (sand field) Texas. Charles lost his courageous fight with cancer and transitioned peacefully at his home on Saturday October 12 .The Jackson family moved to Dallas in the spring of 1942. The family united with the Greater Bethlehem Baptist Church., where Charles was baptized by Pastor C.C. Choice. He was 9 years old. Already the entrepreneur, he had sold the Kansas City Call, The Pittsburg Courier and the Dallas Express newspapers. Shortly after moving to Dallas, he started throwing the Dallas Morning News and later added the Daily Times Herald. He threw the two daily papers (morning and afternoon) until he finished High School in 1949. After graduating from Lincoln High School, he attended and graduated from Bishop College in Marshall, TX. Soon thereafter he was drafted into the US Army. There he honorably served his country until his discharge in 1956. He began teaching that year at the newly opened (for Blacks) James Madison High School. In addition to his teaching duties, his principal, Dr. Thomas Tolbert, placed him in charge of the book room. He remained at Madison High School, until the L.G. Pinkston High School opened in 1964; He transferred there with his principal Dr. Tolbert, where he was again, in charge of the bookroom. During this time, he earned his Master of Arts degree from North Texas State College (now University). He remained at Pinkston until his retirement in 1992. During that period of time he worked with newly formed Upward Bound Program at Southern Methodist University. And even after his retirement, he continued to work with the Upward Bound program at SMU. He definitely impacted the lives of the students he taught. Charles was an avid reader (never without a book) and a very enthusiastic Dallas Cowboys fan. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted daughter, Virginia Ruth (Ginny) Jackson, grandson Sam Davis King, a beloved sister Jowanda Jordan (Vernon) and family, Best Friend Melvin Traylor. Also a host of Cousins, nieces and nephews, other relatives and good friends.
