Obituary of Leroy Jones Leroy Jones Jr. was born July 7, 1932 to Leroy Jones Sr. and Emily Faine Jones in Corsicana, TX. He was an only child. He has been called "Deke" since childhood when one day in grade school an announcement was made over the loudspeaker at school that his father had been made Deacon at the Church. Leroy accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at First independence Baptist Church in Corsicana. He joined Good Street Baptist Church in 1956 where he served until 2005. Leroy graduated at Jackson High School. He was very athletic in football, basketball, track and baseball. He received an athletic scholarship to Bishop College in Marshall, TX where he scored the highest on the college entrance exam. He received his degree in mathematics. It was at Bishop College where he met Lorraine Mitchell who became his loving wife of 50 years. He was employed as a manager for the United States Postal Service for 33 years. During his tenure with the post office he was assigned as Postmaster General in Grand Saline, TX in 1976. Because of his character and commitment to Christ he broke color barriers of that city during his time there. At the end of that term he received a celebration at a restaurant where he was presented with many awards of recognition from the mayor and other city leaders and officials. After his retirement he worked for Sears and then H&R Block teaching the tax preparation classes and also was a tax preparer. Leroy was a born leader. He served as President of his High School class, and the alumni called the Jackson Ex's. He was president of the Buckner Terrace Neighborhood Association as well as numerous other organizations that are too many to name. As a member of Good Street he served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Church Clerk, Assisted the Pastor with baptism, Chairman and co-chairman of numerous boards and committees. He received many awards, certificates and plaques for outstanding service in the church. He also was presented with a plaque from Eddie Bernice Johnson for Outstanding Community Service. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Lorraine Jones and daughter Donna Kaye Hammons. He leaves to cherish his memory: twin daughter, Vickie and Janel Jones/ Grandchildren, Tyesha Ceasar, Taury Gilkey, Melody Brown and Sheperd Allen. Great-grandchildren, Taryn, Chase, Courtney, Kynnidi, Kori and Chance. Cousins, Adolphus Edward, Sharon Crisp and Karon Sheppard and others. Also the church secretary and special friend/play sister Christine Garrett.
