Obituary of Walter Gist Walter Conwalis Gist, Jr, was born to the parentage of Mr. Walter C. Gist Sr. and Mrs. Helen E. Gist on August 14, 1931 in Dallas, Texas. He received his early education from Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School and graduated from Lincoln High School in Dallas, Texas. He attended both Barber College and Texas Southern College for Negros. Walter enlisted into the United States Army where he served two years and then went on to the United States Army Reserves.Walter was joined in Holy Matrimony to Ida Mae Jeffrie on January 20, 1950 in Dallas, Texas. The two remained married until her home-going on September 26, 1998. The couple was blessed with three daughters, Barbara Gist-Giddings, Belinda Gist-Darden, and Schaundra Gist-Williams all of Dallas, Texas. He and Ida Mae moved their family to the Historical Black Community of Hamilton Park in 1958. He eventually joined the United Methodist Church of Hamilton Park where he served and sang in the Male Chorus. Walter also became an active member of the Hamilton Park High School Dad's Club. He was later installed into and became the State Secretary of the Elks Grand Lodge of Dallas, Texas. Walter was employed at Cabell's Incorporated where he worked at both the Cabell's Mini Mart and as a Landscape Foreman at Cabell's Greenhouse. He later moved on to Otis Engineering where he continued professionally as a Master Welder until his retirement.Both parents, Mr. Walter C. Gist Sr. and Mrs. Helen E. Gist; his loving wife, Ida Mae Gist, and his beautiful daughter Schaundra Gist-Williams preceded him in death. Survivors to cherish his memories are two daughters, Barbara Gist-Giddings and Belinda Gist-Darden; five grand children, Michael Darden II (Phyleshia), Marlo Giddings-Ebron, Marvin Giddings Jr. (Timika), Shannon Darden (Nicole), and Cache Williams; eleven great grand children, Jemerey Clark, JeanTavus White, Cornelius Brooks, Michael Darden III, Kiara Connley, Keian Connley, Theasia Ebron, Breanna Darden, Tomoni Giddings, LaMaur Cole II, and Kloe Darden; two very special cousins, Horace Gist and Rasheed Gist, two dear sister-in-laws, and three brother-in-laws along with many special extended relatives and friends. Funeral Service: 11am, Thursday, July 26, 2012 Wake: 7-8pm, Wednesday, July 25, 2012 both at Black and Clark Funeral Home Chapel-2517E. Illinois Avenue-Dallas, Texas 75216 Interment: DFW National Cemetery-Dallas, Texas .
