Obituary of Willie Anderson
Willie Burke Anderson passed away Wednesday, December 8, 2010.
Mrs. Anderson was born September 20, 1914 in Forney, TX. She was the fourth of five children to the daughter of the late John and the Anna (Thomas) Anderson.
She joined Carter Temple CME church at twelve. She later joined Cedar Crest CME church and served. As Recording Steward, Sunday school teacher, and Vacation Bible School Coordinator. She attended Cedar Valley Colored and B.F. Darrell elementary schools, and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1933.
She graduated from Texas College in 1937 majoring in Education and French. She remained at Texas College until 1942 as a teacher of French and English, and sponsor of the Dramatics Club. From 1942-1954, she taught French and English at Booker T. where she organized the first French class for black students in DISD.
She also served as drama coach and sponsor of school plays. In 1942, she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, inducted by national founder, Myra D. Hemmings. She served two terms as Dallas Alumnae Chapter president and numerous committees. In 1943, she joined the local movement for equalization of pay with white teachers.
Willie Burke received her Master's Degree in French and Comparative Literature from Atlanta University in 1946 and studied Drama and Play Directing at Columbia University, New York City in 1948.
In 1966 Willie Burke married Emerson Hodge, Jr. They were married 22 years and he preceded her in death.
She is survived by five nephews, one niece, and countless great and grand nieces & nephews, cousins and loving friends and family.

Wake: 6-7pm, Tuesday, December 14, 2010 Both at Cedar Crest CME Church-1616 E. Illinois Avenue-Dallas, Texas
Interment: Laurel Land Memorial Park-Dallas, Texas.
