Obituary of Angus Greenwood

Angus Greenwood, Jr was born in Henderson, Texas on November 22, 1925 to the union of Angus Greenwood Sr. and Minnie Kemp Johnson. He had two siblings, Minnie Louise and Gertrude Greenwood who preceded him in death. Angus had two sons, John Edward Greenwood, deceased and Angus Greenwood III.
Angus and his mother Minnie came to Dallas, Texas in 1937. In 1944, he did a short tour of duty in the U.S. Navy where he was stationed in Seattle, Washington. On his return, he attended Wiley College from 1948-1952 where he became a member of The Theta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated in 1951. Throughout his lifetime Angus remained an active member of the Wiley Alumni Association in Dallas and the National Chapter.
In the 1950’s, he became employed by the City of Dallas Parks and Recreation Department, where he worked for over 25 years until he retired in 1983. He served as the Area Supervisor. He also held positions of summer leader, part-time recreation assistant, recreation leader and center manager, working at Mildred Dunn (Lagow) Exline Park, Kiest Park, Cummings Park and in Recreation Administration. Angus’ desire to encourage and mentor young people led him to initiate a boys cooking class, 4H Clubs, and he was a member of the planning committee to organize Dallas’ first Arco Jesse Owens Games.
Angus was an avid golfer and spent time daily on the golf course, competing in tournaments around the state. He mentored and coached track, baseball, basketball to many youth who became professional and outstanding athletes and successful businessmen. He dedicated his life to hard work and self discipline. Angus set a good example for all by staying in good physical shape and encouraging others he knew to do the same.
He married Bernice Mayfield, the love of his life, on June 5, 1970 in Dallas Texas. They were devoted to each other for 46 years. During her time of illness, Angus took great pride in caring for Bernice until her passing in 2016.
Angus leaves to cherish his memory, his son Angus Greenwood III, three grandchildren; Marilyn E. Greenwood, Robert Greenwood and Jaquay Jones, nieces and nephews; Cheryl L. Richards[Henry], Donald K. Simms[Gloria], LaMonica Lewis, Pam Porter [Ralph], his great grand children and a host of other family and close friends.
