Elder Melba J. Smith was a true 'elder statesman' where- ever his travels took him in life. He sought diligently to find intrinsic good in people he met and, just as passionately, he worked faithfully and diligently for his family, church and community. I simply got the impression from watching him that Elder Melba Smith lived each day of his life for the Lord's sake, as if it was his first-and-last opportunity to offer God his [Elder Smith] 'personal best' stewardship and offering. There are just not enough words in the English language to describe how truly valuable and meaningful Elder Melba Smith meant to me as a spiritual-father, life-coach, grief counselor, guidance adviser, confidante, bible-study teacher, friend to one-and-all and an incredibly knowledgeable brain-trust on an encyclopedia of topics, while still being a very patient listener & conversationalist to the youngest and oldest in his midst. He was by far one of the most extraordinary people I can remember to enlighten my spiritual journey. Elder Melba Smith's physical presence will be missed for days untold, but the pearls of wisdom and valuable life-lessons he preached & taught to me and so many others will resonate and thrive for years to come. I often told him, "THANK YOU, Elder Smith, for being such a wonderful example of a husband, father, teacher, leader and friend." He would just smile in silence, as one who did not ever want to take personal credit for being so remarkable. Never would he take credit for being the awesome treasure and rare vessel he was to so many. I will miss you, Elder Melba J. Smith, as I wipe away my tears of farewell. Rest in peace for eternity in the arms of Jesus. Affectionately, your spiritual daughter, Beverly Brown

I am going to miss our early Sunday morning conversations before service with Elder. It was military or his days of working and how he helped others from our community with employment. Love you Elder Smith, but God loves you more. I know He said Well done my good and faithful servant. Now it's time for you to rest.
