Celester Leggett - Sims


Celester was born January 14, 1925 in Point, Texas, and is the third of six children born to the parentage of Albert and Zephyr Leggett. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior, was baptized at a young age and served faithfully as a member of the Richland Baptist Church in Point Texas.


Celester received her childhood education from Richland School, in Point Texas. After her parents moved to Dallas in 1941; she enrolled and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Dallas; Class of 1944. Soon after moving to Dallas, Celester united with St. John Baptist Church. She adored children, and found her calling in the Youth Department. In 1947, after meeting the Love of Her Life; Theron B. Sims Sr.; she joined Greater El Bethel Baptist Church, where she dutifully served as a member of the Usher Board, and Board of Deaconess. In 1949 she married Theron B. Sims Sr. and to this union eight children were born.


Celester was blessed with the talent of sewing; she used her exceptional sewing abilities to draw patterns, make tailored suits, and dresses for her children, all with expert attention to detail. She also worked as a professional seamstress for various dressmakers and clothing manufacturers in the Dallas area. She was a marvelous cook, and there was never a shortage of Church folk following the family home after morning service. After the death of her beloved husband,


Celester united with Bethesda Community Church, where she attended faithfully until her health failed. Celester’s loving and kind spirit endeared her to everyone she met; and she never met a child she didn’t love immediately. She was known affectionately in her old neighborhood as “The Grandmother”. Many children of various ethnicities referred to her by the title; and she loved and gleefully accepted it.


Celester is preceded in death by Husband; Theron B. Sims Sr., Son, Theron B. Sims Jr., Grandson Edward Lewis Jr., and Daughter in Law, Natherine Hampton-Sims. Her parents; Albert & Zephyr Leggett, Sisters; Senora, Zephyr Lee and Lyla. Brother’s; Arbin and George.


Celester leaves to cherish wonderful, and lasting memories; Seven children… Arnetta Higgins (Ray-deceased) DeSoto, TX., Nicie Sims-Lewis (Edward Sr.) Lancaster, TX., Michael Sims Sr.(Arvelene) Dallas, TX, Alvita Sims, DeSoto, TX., Alvin Sims Sr.(Janet) Marietta, Ga., Angela Sims-Bell (Norman III) Texas City, TX., Adrain Sims (Katherine) DeSoto, TX. 17 Grandchildren, 27 Great Grandchildren, and 5 Great, Great Grandchildren. A multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews, and adoring friends
